How to Choose the Best Keywords to Promote Your Small Business Online

If you ask any company with a successful SEO strategy how they are able to achieve a high ranking in most search engine results, it is likely that it has something to do with the keywords they choose to include in their content, along with some other factors. In order to attract your target audience, it is highly advantageous to select specific keywords that will help your business show up in search results. Here, we’ll go through four helpful tips for choosing the most effective keywords to promote your small business online!

  • Utilize Long-Tail Keywords
Using long-tail keywords in your content is very important for appearing higher in online search results. These keywords are typically longer and more specific, usually consisting of three or more words or phrases. They have lower search volumes, but are more likely to attract more relevant traffic than shorter and more general keywords. They're called long-tail keywords because if you look at a search demand curve, you will find that these searches appear as a long tail at the end of the graph, with a lower search volume, but much higher conversion rate.

If you think about it, when a customer searches for a very specific phrase, such as “women’s white Adidas running shoes,” they know exactly what they are looking for, and are more likely to make a purchase. Someone who only searches for “running shoes,” on the other hand, probably doesn’t know exactly what they want yet, and may browse for a while before they make their final purchase.

Additionally, because it is likely that a lot of your competitors are using the same shorter keywords as you, it is harder to appear at the top of the search results list with so much competition. With long-tail keywords, there is a higher chance that you show up in the search results when shoppers who are looking for exactly what you sell search for those specific keywords. For this reason, it is important that you identify the long-tail keywords that make sense for your business, and include them in your SEO strategy.
  • Think Like Your Customers
Another important tip for selecting the right keywords is to put yourself in the shoes of your customers. Think about what you would type into Google if you were a customer looking for some of the products or services that your business offers. Consider even asking current customers how they found out about your business and if they used any specific keywords to find you on Google or other search engines. With their additional input, you may be able to gain additional insights on how to best reach your target audience.
  • Study The Competition
It can also be useful to take a look at the keywords that your competitors are using on their websites. Not only can this give you insight on what keywords you might be forgetting, but also can help expand your ideas. Additionally, by checking up on what your competitors offer, you can identify how your business differs, and use that to stand out from them in your ads!
  • Use Keyword Research Tools
Lastly, keyword research tools are great for finding words that your target audience is searching for. If you are using Google Ads, you can use the Google Keyword Planner tool to discover keywords that are relevant for your business, as well as research certain keywords and find out how often they are searched. This will allow you to narrow down your keyword list to those that are going to benefit your business most, and grow your reach online.

SEO is extremely important for being found online, and keywords are a huge part of it. It is important that you use the most relevant keywords wherever possible, whether that be on your website, in social media posts, blog posts, or anywhere else! Remember to monitor and analyze your results, as keywords are constantly evolving and new ones may start trending. With these simple tips, users will be much more likely to find your business when searching for it online, and you can continue growing your business!
